East Orange School District Provides Free Eye Exams and Glasses to More Than 600 Students and Staff

The East Orange School District’s Department of Special Education Services, in partnership with the OneSight EssilorLuxottica Foundation, successfully hosted a free vision clinic from Monday, September 22 through Friday, September 26, 2025, at Cicely Tyson Middle/High School. Over the course of the clinic, more than 600 students and staff members received complete eye exams at no cost. For those in need of corrective lenses, prescription glasses were crafted and dispensed on-site—many participants leaving the same day with improved vision.OneSight Partnership

This immediate service not only supported essential health needs but also strengthened students’ ability to focus, learn, and thrive in the classroom. Eligibility extended to East Orange students ages five and older, with parental or guardian consent required for minors. The clinic operated by appointment, ensuring each participant received personalized attention from licensed vision care professionals. Any unfilled appointments were made available to staff members.

The initiative was led by Ms. Kim Severe, Supervisor of Special Education, whose leadership and commitment to student wellness were key to its success. “When students can see clearly, they can learn, grow, and fully participate in the classroom,” said Ms. Severe. “This clinic gave hundreds of our scholars the gift of better vision, which directly supports their academic achievement and overall well-being.”

OneSight Partnership “This initiative underscores the East Orange School District’s ongoing commitment to equity, wellness, and academic success, ensuring that students and staff have the tools they need to succeed both inside and outside the classroom!”, stated Dr. Christopher C. Irving, Superintendent of Schools. District officials applauded the collaboration with the OneSight EssilorLuxottica Foundation, emphasizing the importance of equitable access to healthcare. By bringing resources directly into the school community, the district helped eliminate financial and logistical barriers that often prevent families from seeking vision care.
